Zereana Jess-Huff was crowned Mrs. Maryland 2014, Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Crowne Plaza Baltimore North-Hunt Valley in Timonium, Maryland.  In addition to the crown, Huff was also awarded in the swimsuit and physical fitness categories while competing against 6 delegates from across the state.  We had the opportunity to connect with Zereana after her win and to get her first thoughts.

PIN: What did it feel like to hear your name called as the winner?

ZEREANA: When my name was called as Mrs. Maryland America 2014 it was a moment of immense pride. I immediately looked at my husband and whispered, "Thank you." I scanned the crowd for my daughter and when I saw her I felt such joy. It was so important for me to be up on that stage showing her that cancer could be beat. With shining hair, glowing skin, and a smile a mile wide I showed her that it was okay, that we survived, and that mom was going to be alright. We needed this victory as a family and I am so grateful!

PIN: How will you be spending your year as Mrs Maryland America 2014?

ZEREANA: As Mrs. Maryland America 2014 I plan to spend my year advocating for Ovarian Cancer Awareness.

PIN: You have had a personal experience with Ovarian Cancer.  What motivates you to spread the word to other women?

ZEREANA: When I think back to when the oncologist first broke the news I'll never forget his words, he said, "Zereana if we had this conversation 2 months ago you might not be looking at chemotherapy." It is the greatest regret of my life that I didn't listen to my body. I want women to know that its okay to slow down. Your health has to come first.

Zereana was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in March of 2012.  After an extensive surgery and five months of chemotherapy, she was pronounced cancer free in October 2012.  As Mrs. Maryland America 2014, Huff will partner with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) and the Junior League of Baltimore to promote awareness for ovarian cancer and numerous other community initiatives involving women’s health and family lifestyle.  Throughout her tenure, Dr. Zereana Jess-Huff will focus her efforts on encouraging women to “think outside of the bra.”

In August 2014, Dr. Zereana Jess-Huff will represent Maryland, and compete for the title of Mrs. America Pageant 2014 in Tucson, AZ along with contestants from all fifty states and the District of Columbia.  The new Mrs. America will then go on to represent the country in the Mrs. World Pageant.
